August
month was very busy and lengthy for me. I couldn't get much time to write blog. Getting busier day-by-day but somehow still managed to write this blog for this month. Aha I'll not give up easily :)
These days I’m thinking of starting another blog named “Tech-analogy”.
This blog is about analogy of technical
things which I think of. Whenever I start to master about some technical
concept, I generally have my own good examples in common day-to-day activities to
explain and make it understand to somebody who doesn’t have any technical background. That is, I will try to make analogy of day-to-day life
examples to understand about the technical concept.
Earlier
in the last week, my grandmother asked me, what exactly do I work on? Just to
give you a background, she just studied Kannada medium till class 2 or 3 and doesn’t know English.
She even can’t pronounce ‘Software Engineer’ when somebody asks, what does your
grandson or granddaughter do in Bangalore! She spells usually as "Staffware Engineer" or "Stofware Engineer". For her, how can I explain what I work
on? Or What is a software? Or What is a hardware? Or What is a device driver? Or
What is Customer Support? etc. The intention of her asking to know what exactly do I
work was so genuine but at the same time very difficult to explain. Somehow, I don’t know from where but I
got wonderful thoughts or analogy that I explained bit-by-bit and byte-by-byte about most of the
stuffs with a classic example of building house. Now if someone has enough time
and ask her what your grandchildren do, then I’m sure she will be explaining
with full detail :P
Not
only this, but few day’s back, my school friend, who is from non-technical background
asked me a question - What is this 'android'? I use on mobile and hear lot about
it everywhere but I don’t know what it is. I too talk about it but I don’t clearly know what exactly is android.
Now
for me or for us (who work on it) we will be so much involved in working that
we fail to define what it is? When he asked this question I was stuck.
Literally stuck for 2mins on how to explain or tell him. Then I took an example
of transportation service and tried explaining him. I hope he understood.
Many times I have come across in a situation to explain concepts like Virtual Memory (as Bank), Cache Operations (as stationery/grocery shop), Scheduler (as a doctor clinic) etc to some less technical person and have explained them with nice analogies so as they understand the concept very well.
Similarly there are in-numerous examples when some technical concept is supposed to be explained to a non-technical person, excellent analogy pops up right into my head. So I thought of capturing these analogies in a blog. Initially I thought to update them on this blog itself as its title says, “My Thoughts” but later felt lets separate it out with another blog with new cool new name as “Tech-analogy”.

You
might be wondering, what will be new for me to read in this tech-analogy blog if
I already knew the technical concept very well. Then I would say to read for the sake that
if someone asks you as what is ‘this’ or
how does ‘this’ work etc then you can get some ideas from my examples in the
blog to share and make them understand. or else i would say to read just for time pass and to increase my blog hit count ;)
Well,
just to re-iterate, I still don’t know whether to start this new blog or not as
I already told in beginning that I’m not getting enough time these days to maintain this current blog itself. So lets see what best i can do. Should i keep explaining the examples/analogy of technical concept and try forget them or make a little effort and try to capture them into a blog as reference!
